Conifers
Conifers are some of the most versatile and reliable plants you can grow in a New Zealand garden. Whether you’re looking for a formal hedge, a privacy screen, a feature tree, a dwarf specimen for a rock garden, or simply year-round colour and structure, conifers offer an incredible range of shapes, sizes and foliage colours.
Unlike deciduous trees that lose their leaves each winter, conifers remain evergreen throughout the year, providing shelter, privacy and visual interest in every season. Their low-maintenance nature and wide range of growth habits make them a favourite for both modern and traditional garden designs.
At CJ’s Plants, we grow and stock a carefully selected range of conifers suited to New Zealand conditions, including screening conifers, specimen trees, dwarf varieties and colourful feature plants.
Why Plant Conifers?
Conifers are often thought of simply as hedging plants, but they can play many different roles in the landscape.
Year-Round Structure
One of the biggest advantages of conifers is their evergreen nature. While many plants disappear into dormancy during winter, conifers continue providing colour, texture and structure when the garden needs it most.
Excellent Screening & Privacy
Many conifers naturally grow into dense, upright forms that make them ideal for creating privacy from neighbours, screening unwanted views or reducing wind exposure.
Popular screening conifers include:
- Thuja Smaragd
- Leyland Cypress
- Cryptomeria
- Cupressus varieties
Low Maintenance
Once established, most conifers require very little attention. Many varieties naturally maintain their shape without regular pruning, making them ideal for busy gardeners.
Drought & Frost Tolerance
Many conifer species are remarkably tough and cope well with Canterbury frosts, dry summers and exposed conditions once established.
Colour Beyond Green
Modern conifers come in an incredible range of colours including:
- Golden yellow
- Lime green
- Blue-grey
- Silver
- Deep emerald green
- Bronze winter tones
These colours can provide contrast and interest throughout the year.
Growing Conifers Successfully
Conifers are generally easy-care plants but will perform best when given suitable growing conditions.
- Sunlight: Most conifers grow best in full sun where foliage colour remains strongest and growth stays dense.
- Soil: Conifers prefer well-drained soil but many are adaptable to a wide range of conditions. Avoid planting into permanently waterlogged areas.
- Watering: Water regularly during the first year while plants establish. Once established, most conifers become relatively drought tolerant.
- Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and foliage colour.
Conifers for New Zealand Gardens
Conifers are particularly valuable in New Zealand landscapes because they provide:
- Shelter from prevailing winds
- Privacy screening
- Year-round structure
- Low maintenance gardening
- Frost tolerance
- Long-lived landscape value
Whether you’re planting a boundary hedge, creating a formal garden, building a shelter belt or simply looking for a beautiful evergreen feature tree, our range of conifers offers options for every garden style and size.
