Picea orientalis, commonly known as Caucasian Spruce or Oriental Spruce, is a graceful evergreen conifer admired for its dense habit, fine textured foliage and elegant pyramidal form. Native to the mountainous regions surrounding the Caucasus and northeastern Turkey, this beautiful spruce is highly valued for its rich dark green needles and stately appearance in larger gardens and landscapes.

Unlike many other spruce species, Oriental Spruce features exceptionally short glossy needles that create a refined soft texture year-round. In spring, attractive reddish-purple cones emerge before maturing to warm brown tones, adding seasonal interest and contrast against the deep evergreen foliage.

Slow to moderate growing and extremely hardy once established, Picea orientalis makes an excellent specimen tree, shelter tree or long-term landscape feature. Its naturally symmetrical form requires very little maintenance and provides structure, shelter and year-round greenery in cooler New Zealand gardens.

How to establish your Picea Orientalis?

Position

Plant in full sun to partial shade in a position with good airflow. Best growth and foliage colour occur in sunny positions.

Soil

Prefers moist but well-drained soil. Performs best in fertile loamy soils but is adaptable to a range of free-draining conditions.

Watering

Water regularly while establishing, particularly during dry periods. Once established, Oriental Spruce is relatively hardy and low maintenance.

Feeding

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and strong foliage colour.

Spacing

Allow plenty of room for mature growth, particularly when planting as a specimen tree. Space approximately 4–6m away from buildings or neighbouring trees.

How to maintain your Picea Orientalis once established?

Very low maintenance once established. Remove any damaged or dead branches as required to maintain shape and airflow.

Mulching around the base of young trees will help retain moisture and suppress weeds, particularly during establishment. Avoid planting in poorly drained or waterlogged soils.
