Buxus - Boxwood
Buxus, commonly known as Box Hedge, Boxwood or Japanese Boxwood remains one of the most popular hedging plants in New Zealand. Loved for its dense evergreen foliage, tidy growth habit, and ability to be clipped into neat formal shapes, Buxus is a timeless choice for creating structure and definition in the garden.
Whether you're edging a pathway, framing a rose garden, creating a formal border, or establishing a classic box hedge, Buxus offers year-round colour and a polished appearance that suits both traditional and contemporary landscapes.
At CJ's Plant Farm, we grow a range of Buxus varieties to suit different garden styles and applications, including Buxus Sempervirens, Independence, Freedom, Sprinter and Fastigiata.
Why Choose Buxus?
Buxus is one of the most versatile evergreen shrubs available. Its naturally dense branching habit makes it ideal for hedging, while its small leaves respond exceptionally well to trimming and shaping.
Key benefits of Buxus include:
- Evergreen year-round foliage
- Excellent for formal hedges
- Responds well to clipping
- Suitable for topiary
- Long-lived and reliable
- Ideal for borders and garden edging
- Creates structure in all garden styles
- Suitable for pots and containers
Few plants provide the same level of formality and garden definition as a well-maintained Buxus hedge.
Buxus for Hedging
Buxus is most commonly used as a low formal hedge. Its dense foliage creates a clean, tidy edge that helps separate different areas of the garden and highlights feature plantings.
Buxus hedges are commonly used around:
- Rose gardens
- Perennial borders
- Vegetable gardens
- Pathways and driveways
- Formal gardens
- Courtyards
- Entranceways
For a traditional low hedge, plants are typically spaced 20–30cm apart depending on the size being planted.
Regular trimming encourages dense growth and helps maintain the desired shape.
Our Buxus Varieties
Buxus Sempervirens (no longer growing)
The classic English Box. Buxus Sempervirens has been used in formal gardens for centuries and remains one of the most popular hedging plants available.
It develops into a dense evergreen shrub with small dark green leaves and excellent clipping qualities. Ideal for low hedges, topiary and formal garden designs.
Buxus Independence
A modern Buxus variety selected for its strong growth and improved performance. Independence develops a dense, healthy hedge with rich green foliage and excellent structure.
Ideal for gardeners wanting a reliable, attractive hedge with outstanding year-round appearance.
Buxus Freedom
Freedom combines vigorous growth with the neat appearance gardeners expect from traditional Buxus. It establishes quickly and responds well to trimming, making it an excellent option for new hedges.
Buxus Fastigiata
Fastigiata features a naturally upright growth habit, making it useful for creating narrow hedges, vertical accents and architectural structure within the garden.
Its compact form makes it particularly useful where space is limited.
Growing Buxus Successfully
Buxus performs best in:
- Full sun to part shade
- Well-drained soil
- Sheltered to moderately exposed sites
- Regular watering during establishment
Once established, Buxus is relatively drought tolerant and requires minimal maintenance beyond occasional trimming.
Apply mulch around the base to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Trimming and Maintenance
Regular trimming is the secret to a beautiful Buxus hedge.
Light trimming once or twice each year helps maintain shape and encourages dense branching. Many gardeners carry out their main trim during spring and again in late summer.
Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant at any one time, particularly on younger hedges.
The Perfect Plant for Garden Structure
While flowering plants come and go throughout the seasons, Buxus provides year-round structure and form. It acts as the framework that holds a garden together, creating neat lines, defining spaces, and providing a backdrop for colourful seasonal displays.
Whether you're planting a classic box hedge, creating elegant topiary, or simply adding structure to a garden bed, our range of Buxus plants offers one of the most reliable and versatile hedging solutions available for New Zealand gardens.
