Hanmer Springs

Hanmer Springs might be famous for its hot pools, but it’s also one of North Canterbury’s trickier spots to garden in. Between frosty winters, hot dry summers, and that alpine wind, not every plant will thrive — but the right ones will absolutely flourish! Here’s what to keep in mind when planting in Hanmer Springs.

🌦 1. Know Your Climate

Hanmer Springs sits in an alpine basin — meaning:

  • Cold winters with regular frosts and occasional snow
  • Hot, dry summers with low rainfall
  • Strong winds (especially nor’westers)

👉 Choose hardy, frost-tolerant and drought-resistant plants. Look for varieties that can handle temperature swings and dry soils.

🌱 2. Check Your Soil

Hanmer soils are often gravelly or sandy with limited organic matter. That’s great for drainage but not great for moisture retention.

  • Mix in compost or garden mix to help the soil hold water and nutrients.
  • Mulch around plants to reduce evaporation.
  • Water deeply but infrequently to encourage strong root growth.

🌞 3. Pick the Right Spot

The sun can be fierce in summer and scarce in winter.

  • Shelter: Use trees, hedges, or fencing to protect young plants from wind and frost.
  • Sun-loving plants: Great for exposed spots — think lavenders, grasses, and natives.
  • Shade-tolerant plants: Ideal for under trees or along the southern side of your property.

💧 4. Watering Wisely

Even hardy plants need help to get established. With out support early on plants will suffer and potentially look rubbish until they are established.

  • Water well at planting and regularly through the first summer.
  • Add drip irrigation or soaker hoses if possible — they’re efficient and reduce waste.
  • Once settled, most natives and tough exotics will need little extra watering.

🌸 5. Seasonal Planting Tips

  • Spring: Best time to plant most shrubs and perennials.
  • Autumn: Great for trees and hedges so roots can establish before winter.
  • Winter: Avoid planting frost-sensitive varieties until the ground warms.

🌿 6. Embrace Natives

Native plants are naturally suited to Hanmer’s conditions and help support local wildlife. Try:
