Cupressus Ovensii
Cupressus Ovensii
Leyland Cypress, Leyland Cypress Plant
Cupressus ovensii, commonly grown and referred to as Leyland Cypress, is one of the fastest-growing and most popular evergreen screening trees available in New Zealand. Widely planted as a shelter hedge and privacy screen, the Leyland Cypress plant is prized for its rapid growth, dense foliage and ability to create an effective windbreak in a relatively short period of time.
With its soft feathery green foliage and naturally upright growth habit, Leyland Cypress forms a thick evergreen barrier ideal for blocking wind, reducing noise and creating year-round privacy. Its adaptability and vigorous growth make it especially useful for lifestyle blocks, boundary planting and larger gardens where quick coverage is desired.
Hardy, resilient and easy to maintain, Cupressus ovensii tolerates wind, coastal conditions and regular trimming exceptionally well. Whether left as a tall shelter belt or clipped into a formal hedge, the Leyland Cypress remains one of the best choices for fast evergreen screening in New Zealand landscapes.

How to maintain your Cupressus Ovensii once established?
Trim regularly to maintain the desired height and width, particularly when used as a formal hedge or shelter screen. Frequent light trimming helps encourage dense compact growth.
Avoid cutting back into old bare wood where possible, as regrowth may be limited. Mulching around young plants will help conserve moisture and suppress weeds during establishment.
