Collection: Plums

Plums

If you’re looking for a fruit tree that delivers year after year, it’s hard to go past a plum tree. They’re among the easiest fruit trees to grow, reward you with heavy crops of delicious fruit, and put on a stunning display of blossom each spring before the leaves even appear.

At CJ’s Plants, we stock a carefully selected range of plum trees suited to New Zealand gardens. Whether you’re after sweet dessert plums, traditional preserving varieties or heritage European plums, our collection has something for every home orchard.

Our range includes Black Doris, Omega, Greengage, Coe’s Golden Drop and Reine Claude de Bavay, each offering its own unique flavour, harvest time and growing habit.

Why Grow Plum Trees?

Plum trees are one of the most rewarding fruit trees for New Zealand gardeners. Once established, they’re capable of producing generous crops every summer with relatively little maintenance.

In spring, the trees are covered in masses of white blossom that attracts bees and other beneficial pollinators. By late summer, the branches are often loaded with fruit ready for eating, preserving or sharing with friends and family.

Many plum varieties are incredibly versatile in the kitchen. They’re delicious eaten fresh, but also ideal for bottling, jams, chutneys, crumbles and baking.

Growing Plum Trees in New Zealand

Plum trees thrive throughout much of New Zealand and perform best in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. They appreciate good airflow and regular watering while young, but once established they become relatively low-maintenance.

Winter pruning helps maintain an open canopy and encourages healthy new growth, while an annual feed in early spring supports strong flowering and fruit production.

Depending on the variety, some plum trees are self-fertile while others benefit from having a compatible pollinator nearby. Be sure to check each product page for pollination requirements before planting.

Japanese vs European Plum Trees

Our collection includes both Japanese and European plum varieties.

Japanese plums, such as Black Doris and Omega, generally produce larger, juicy fruit and are excellent for fresh eating. They tend to crop heavily and ripen earlier in the season.

European plums, including Greengage, Coe’s Golden Drop and Reine Claude de Bavay, are prized for their rich, complex flavour and are favourites for desserts, preserving and traditional home orchards.

By planting a mix of varieties, you can enjoy a longer harvest season and a wider range of flavours.
