Rosmarinus officinalis 'Tuscan Blue', also known as Salvia rosmarinus 'Tuscan Blue', is a vigorous, upright rosemary prized for its aromatic evergreen foliage, striking violet-blue flowers and excellent culinary qualities. This popular variety forms a dense, upright shrub that is equally at home in herb gardens, vegetable gardens, Mediterranean landscapes and ornamental borders.

Flowering from late winter through spring, and often again in autumn, Tuscan Blue provides an early source of nectar for bees while filling the garden with fragrance. Its upright growth habit also makes it one of the best rosemary varieties for informal hedging and screening.

How to establish your Rosmarinus Officinalis Tuscan Blue?

Plant Tuscan Blue Rosemary in a full sun position.

For best performance:

Choose a site with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
Ensure good airflow around the plant.
Avoid shaded or damp positions.

Full sun encourages compact growth, abundant flowering and the strongest fragrance.

How to maintain your Rosmarinus Officinalis Tuscan Blue once established?

Water regularly until the plant is established.

Once established, Tuscan Blue is highly drought tolerant.

Water only during extended dry periods and allow the soil to dry between waterings.

Avoid overwatering.

Rosemary requires very little fertiliser.

For healthy growth:

Apply compost lightly in spring.
Use a low-nitrogen slow-release fertiliser if required.
Avoid excessive feeding, which reduces the concentration of aromatic oils in the foliage.

Regular trimming helps maintain a dense, bushy shape.

After Flowering
Lightly trim the plant to encourage branching.
Harvest stems regularly for cooking.
Remove any damaged or dead branches.
Important

Avoid cutting back into old woody stems that have little or no leafy growth, as rosemary may not regenerate well from old wood.

Fresh sprigs can be harvested throughout the year.

For the best flavour:

Pick young, fresh stems.
Harvest regularly to encourage new growth.
Use fresh or dry the foliage for later use.

Tuscan Blue is highly frost hardy and well suited to New Zealand gardens.

Winter care is minimal:

Ensure excellent drainage.
Avoid waterlogged soil.
Remove any damaged growth in spring if necessary.

Tuscan Blue grows exceptionally well in large pots.

For best results:

Use a premium free-draining potting mix.
Position in full sun.
Water sparingly.
Feed lightly in spring.

Container-grown plants are ideal near outdoor entertaining areas where their fragrance can be enjoyed.
