Phormium Dark Delight
Phormium Dark Delight
Black Flax
Phormium Dark Delight is a striking black flax that brings bold colour and strong architectural form to the garden without needing constant attention. Its long upright foliage is a rich deep burgundy-black, adding contrast, texture and a slightly dramatic “I know what I’m doing” look to modern and native-style plantings.
This hardy New Zealand flax works brilliantly as a feature plant, in mass plantings, large pots or mixed borders where darker foliage helps make surrounding plants pop. It pairs especially well with silver, lime green and soft flowering perennials.
Like most good flaxes, Dark Delight is tough as old boots once established. It handles wind, frost, dry conditions and exposed Canterbury sites far better than many softer ornamental plants.
A great option if you want year-round structure and colour without signing yourself up for endless maintenance.

Position
Plant in full sun for the darkest foliage colour and strongest upright growth.
Soil
Very adaptable provided the soil drains reasonably well. Handles poorer soils better than many ornamental plants.

Water regularly while establishing. Once settled in, this black flax is highly drought tolerant and generally very hardy.
Feeding
Usually not demanding. A light feed in spring can help encourage fresh growth, especially in containers.
Wind & Frost
Excellent for exposed Canterbury gardens. Handles wind, frost and coastal conditions well once established.
Spacing
Allow around 1–1.2m between plants when mass planting or creating bold foliage groupings.
How to maintain your Phormium Dark Delight once established?
How to maintain your Phormium Dark Delight once established?
Very low maintenance overall. Remove old or damaged leaves by cutting them cleanly from the base as needed.
Every few years, older plants can be tidied or divided if they become crowded. Otherwise, this is largely a plant you can stick in the ground and let it get on with life.
Which, frankly, is the kind of attitude we appreciate.
