Phormium Black Rage
Phormium Black Rage
Black Rage Flax, NZ Flax
Phormium ‘Black Rage’ is a bold and dramatic New Zealand flax prized for its intensely dark foliage and strong architectural presence. Forming a dense clump of upright strap-like leaves in deep burgundy to near-black tones, this striking evergreen adds instant contrast, texture and structure to modern gardens and landscape designs.
Its rich dark colouring holds throughout the year and becomes especially dramatic when planted against lighter foliage, stone or contemporary hardscaping. Compact enough for urban gardens yet bold enough to stand alone, Phormium ‘Black Rage’ is ideal for feature planting, mass planting, containers and low-maintenance borders.
Like many New Zealand flaxes, mature plants may produce tall flower stems in summer carrying nectar-rich blooms that attract birds and pollinators. Hardy, adaptable and easy care, this standout variety thrives in a wide range of New Zealand conditions including coastal and exposed sites.

Very low maintenance once established. Remove damaged or older leaves by cutting cleanly at the base to keep the plant looking fresh.

Avoid cutting directly through the centre of the plant to protect future growth.
