Pot Size/Grade

Phormium ‘Black Magic’ is a petite New Zealand native flax with dramatic dark foliage and a compact architectural form. This smaller-growing selection delivers all the impact of traditional dark flaxes while fitting beautifully into modern gardens, borders and container planting.

Its slender arching leaves emerge deep burgundy and mature into rich near-black tones, creating bold contrast against green, silver and flowering plants. Compact and refined, ‘Black Magic’ brings texture, structure and year-round interest without overwhelming smaller garden spaces.

Despite its elegant appearance, this NZ native flax is exceptionally tough and adaptable. It handles wind, coastal conditions and dry periods once established, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes throughout New Zealand. Mature plants may also produce tall summer flower spikes that attract tūī and other nectar-feeding birds.

Ideal for edging pathways, feature pots, mass planting and contemporary garden designs, Phormium ‘Black Magic’ delivers strong colour and structure in a beautifully compact form.
