Phormium ‘Black Beauty’ is a dramatic evergreen flax prized for its deep burgundy-black foliage and strong architectural form. The long upright strappy leaves create bold contrast in modern gardens, coastal plantings and contemporary landscape designs, making it one of the most striking dark-leaved flaxes available.

This hardy New Zealand flax forms a dense clump of rich near-black foliage that holds its colour year-round, especially in full sun. Its strong upright habit makes it ideal for feature planting, mass planting, containers and low-maintenance borders where texture and structure are important.

In summer, mature plants may produce tall flower spikes carrying nectar-rich blooms that attract birds and pollinators. Tough, wind tolerant and adaptable, Phormium ‘Black Beauty’ performs exceptionally well in New Zealand conditions and is an excellent choice for coastal gardens, modern landscapes and dry garden planting schemes.

Adaptable to most soil types provided drainage is reasonable. Performs particularly well in free-draining soils.

Watering

Water regularly while establishing. Once established, Phormium ‘Black Beauty’ is highly drought tolerant and requires minimal watering.

Feeding

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy fresh foliage growth.

Spacing

Allow approximately 1–1.5m between plants depending on the desired finished effect and planting density.

How to maintain your Phormium Black Beauty once established?

Very low maintenance once established. Remove older or damaged leaves at the base as needed to keep the plant tidy.

Flower stems can be cut back after flowering. Older clumps may be divided every few years if required to rejuvenate growth or create new plants.
