The Chatham Island Forget-Me-Not is one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary native plants, treasured for its enormous glossy foliage and dazzling clusters of brilliant blue flowers. Native to the remote Chatham Islands, this stunning perennial brings a lush, almost tropical appearance to shaded areas of the garden while remaining uniquely New Zealand.

Large, leathery dark-green leaves form a dense mound of foliage that looks attractive throughout the year. In spring and early summer, the plant produces masses of intense sky-blue flowers that seem to glow against the glossy leaves. The flowers are among the bluest found in the New Zealand flora and create a truly unforgettable display.

The Chatham Island Forget-Me-Not thrives in cool, sheltered positions with moist, free-draining soil. It is particularly effective in woodland gardens, beneath trees, alongside streams, or planted amongst ferns and hostas where its bold foliage provides texture and contrast.

Despite its exotic appearance, this remarkable native is surprisingly easy to grow when provided with protection from harsh sun and drying conditions. It is a must-have for gardeners looking to create a lush, subtropical feel in shaded parts of the garden.

How to establish your Myosotidium Hortensia?

Position
Plant your Chatham Island Forget-Me-Not in a sheltered position with protection from hot afternoon sun. Dappled shade or bright shade will produce the healthiest foliage and best flowering display.

Soil

Watering
Water regularly during dry weather. The large leaves appreciate consistent moisture, particularly during summer.

Feeding
Apply compost or a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage lush foliage and abundant flowers.

Spacing
Allow approximately 60–80cm between plants to accommodate their broad leaves and mature spread

How to maintain your Myosotidium Hortensia once established?

Remove spent flower stems and any damaged leaves as required. Apply mulch annually to help conserve soil moisture and maintain cool root conditions.

In colder regions, protect from severe frosts and cold winds. Established plants are reasonably hardy but perform best in sheltered garden locations.
