Pot Size/Grade

Metrosideros ‘Maungapiko’ is a compact and hardy form of the iconic New Zealand pōhutukawa, prized for its dense evergreen growth and masses of vibrant crimson-red flowers. Ideal for smaller gardens where a full-sized pōhutukawa may be too large, this attractive selection delivers all the character and colour of a classic pohutukawa plant in a more manageable form.

Flowering through summer, Metrosideros ‘Maungapiko’ produces clusters of brilliant brush-like blooms that attract tūī, bees and other pollinators while creating a spectacular display of colour. Its glossy green foliage remains attractive year-round, making it equally valuable as a flowering feature tree, informal hedge or screening plant.

Naturally tolerant of wind, coastal exposure and dry conditions once established, this compact pōhutukawa performs exceptionally well throughout New Zealand and is ideal for coastal gardens, native planting and low-maintenance landscapes.

How to maintain your Metrosideros Maungapiko once established?

Very low maintenance once established. Light pruning after flowering can be used to maintain shape and encourage dense branching.

Mulch around young plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds while establishing. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood.
