Loropetalum ‘Fire Dance’ (Chinese fringe flower) is an evergreen shrub grown for two things: deep burgundy-purple foliage and hot pink, frilly “fringe” flowers that show up from late winter into spring (often with extra flowers later in the season in mild spots).

In the garden, Loropetalum ‘Fire Dance’ gives you colour even when nothing else is happening — perfect near entryways, patios, or as a bold contrast in mixed borders. It also handles clipping, so you can use it as a low hedge or shaped feature shrub. In NZ conditions it typically grows to around 1–1.5 m tall and wide if left to form naturally (can be kept smaller with pruning).

How to establish your Loropetalum Firedance?

Position
Best in full sun to part shade. More sun usually = stronger colour; part shade can be better in hot, exposed sites.

Choose a sheltered spot out of harsh wind for the best-looking foliage and flowers.

Soil
Likes moist but well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Good drainage matters — avoid boggy winter patches.

On heavy clay: plant on a slight mound/raised area and work in compost to help drainage.

Watering (first season)
Water regularly for the first 6–10 weeks, then give a deep soak during dry spells through the first summer. Once established it’s more forgiving, but it still looks best with consistent moisture.

Frost (South Island reality check)
Handles moderate frost, but in colder inland pockets protect young plants (and avoid icy wind).

How to maintain your Loropetalum Firedance once established?

Prune after flowering: Loropetalum sets buds on older wood, so wait until it finishes its main spring flush before shaping.

Light shaping beats hard cutting: If it’s getting big, reduce size gradually (roughly no more than a third at a time) to keep it healthy and flowering well.

Feed in spring: A light spring feed and a compost top-dress helps keep foliage rich and growth steady (especially in poorer soils).

Mulch yearly: Refresh mulch to hold moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it off the main stem.

Tidy any winter damage: Snip out dead or crossed stems any time you notice them.
