Lomandra Tanika Variegata
Lomandra Tanika Variegata
variegated lomandra grass
Lomandra 'Tanika Variegata' is the variegated form of the hugely popular Tanika Lomandra, combining the same tidy, clumping habit with fine, lightly variegated strap-like foliage.
Growing to around 70cm high and 1m wide, it forms a soft, arching evergreen mound that provides year-round texture without becoming enormous or unruly.
The pale variegation gives the foliage a lighter appearance than standard green Tanika, making it particularly useful for brightening darker planting schemes, lining pathways, mass planting or adding contrast amongst green shrubs.
It's tough, compact and relatively low maintenance.
Basically Tanika put on a nicer shirt.

How to establish your Lomandra Tanika Variegata?
How to establish your Lomandra Tanika Variegata?
Tanika Variegata can tolerate full sun, but its lighter variegated foliage is generally at its best in light to moderate shade, particularly where conditions are hot and dry.
For Canterbury gardens, consider a position with:
Morning sun
Light afternoon shade
Protection from extreme reflected heat
Some shelter from the strongest hot nor'west winds
Free-draining soil
Standard green Tanika is particularly forgiving of exposed conditions.
The variegated form deserves just a little more consideration.
How to maintain your Lomandra Tanika Variegata once established?
How to maintain your Lomandra Tanika Variegata once established?
Water regularly during the establishment period.
Even drought-tolerant plants need water while they're busy becoming drought tolerant.
Deep watering encourages the roots to move into the surrounding soil and helps establish a stronger plant.
Once established, Tanika Variegata has good drought tolerance.
Water during prolonged hot and dry periods if you want the foliage to remain looking its best.
Plants grown in containers will require considerably more regular watering than those planted in the ground.
Apply mulch around newly planted Lomandra to:
Retain soil moisture
Reduce weed competition
Moderate soil temperature
Improve establishment
Keep thick mulch slightly away from the centre of the plant.
Once established, the dense clumping foliage does a reasonably good job of shading the soil underneath itself.
Tanika Variegata is not a particularly demanding feeder.
A balanced slow-release fertiliser suitable for native-style planting can be applied in spring or autumn.
In reasonably fertile soil, feeding every year may not be necessary.
Avoid excessive high-nitrogen fertiliser.
We're trying to maintain a compact, tidy clump – not create a Lomandra that thinks it's entered a competitive growing championship.
Most of the time, maintenance simply involves removing:
Damaged leaves
Brown foliage
Old flower stems
Untidy growth
Because pale variegated foliage shows blemishes more readily than plain green leaves, Tanika Variegata may need slightly more occasional tidying than standard Tanika.
Individual damaged leaves can be removed near the base.
Established Lomandra is generally a hardy landscape plant.
In colder gardens, some foliage may become marked following severe frost, particularly the lighter variegated sections.
There's usually no need to panic.
Wait until the worst of winter has passed, then remove damaged foliage or cut the plant back if a complete refresh is required.
Healthy established plants should produce fresh growth as conditions improve.
Hot, Dry Wind
This is one area where we'd treat Tanika Variegata a little differently from standard Tanika.
The variegated foliage can show heat and wind damage more readily, so avoid the most brutally exposed positions if possible.
In Canterbury, protection from intense afternoon heat and the strongest hot, dry nor'west winds will help maintain better foliage quality.
If you need a Lomandra for an absolutely punishing site, one of the tougher solid-green forms may be the better option.
Its compact size makes Tanika Variegata a useful container plant.
The soft arching foliage works well in:
Entrance pots
Courtyards
Patios
Contemporary landscapes
Commercial planters
Use a quality free-draining potting mix and a container with good drainage holes.
Container plants will need more regular watering and occasional feeding.
