Liatris Floristan White
Liatris Floristan White
Liatris ‘Floristan White’ is a summer-flowering perennial that sends up tall, upright spikes of soft white blooms above narrow green foliage. It’s a brilliant plant for adding vertical height and clean colour through mid to late summer, right when many borders can start to look a bit tired.
In NZ gardens, Liatris ‘Floristan White’ suits mixed borders, cottage gardens, modern perennial planting, and cutting gardens. It looks best planted in small groups or drifts, and it’s also a favourite for cut flowers (fresh or dried). The flowers are a reliable drawcard for bees and butterflies, so it’s an easy way to add more pollinator activity to the garden.
Best results: plant Liatris ‘Floristan White’ in full sun and free-draining soil. It’s a clump-former (not a runner), dies back over winter, then shoots away again in spring.
Extra success tip (windy sites)
In very exposed spots, plant near lower shrubs or within a mixed border so it’s supported a bit — usually it stands well, but strong coastal gusts can knock any tall flower stem around.

How to establish your Liatris Floristan White?
How to establish your Liatris Floristan White?
Soil
Prefers free-draining soil. If you’ve got heavy clay, plant into a raised area or improve drainage with compost/grit.
Avoid spots that stay wet over winter — the corms don’t like sitting soggy.
Watering to establish
Water well at planting, then keep evenly moist for the first 6–8 weeks.
Through the first summer, give a deep soak during dry spells. After that it’s fairly tough, but it will flower better if it doesn’t dry out completely while buds are forming.
Planting & spacing
Plant in groups of 3–7 for the best visual impact.
Space 25–35 cm apart (closer for a fuller clump effect sooner).
How to maintain your Liatris Floristan White once established?
How to maintain your Liatris Floristan White once established?
Deadhead (optional): If you want a tidier look, snip off spent flower spikes once they fade. If you like a more natural look, leave them on a bit longer.
Winter cut-back: The plant dies back over winter. Cut stems down to ground level in late winter (or when they’re fully browned off).
Feeding: In early spring, a light application of general garden fertiliser or compost is plenty. Don’t overdo nitrogen or you’ll get more leaf than flower.
Divide when crowded: Every 3–5 years, lift and divide clumps in late winter/early spring if flowering slows or the centre gets tight. Replant the healthiest outer pieces.
Slug/snail watch (spring): New shoots can be nibbled when they first emerge—especially in damp gardens. A quick check early saves headaches later.
