The Blue Jacaranda is one of the world’s most spectacular flowering trees, renowned for its breathtaking display of lavender-blue flowers that transform the canopy into a cloud of colour each spring and early summer. Jacaranda mimosifolia has become a garden favourite wherever climates allow, prized for its elegant fern-like foliage and unforgettable floral display.

Before the new season’s leaves fully emerge, mature trees produce masses of trumpet-shaped blue-violet flowers that cover the branches in a stunning spectacle. The flowers are followed by fresh green, finely divided foliage that gives the tree a soft, delicate appearance throughout the warmer months. In autumn and winter, the open branching structure creates an attractive silhouette that adds architectural interest to the landscape.

The Blue Jacaranda makes an exceptional specimen tree for larger gardens, parks and avenues. Its broad spreading canopy eventually provides welcome summer shade while creating a striking focal point when in bloom. Few trees can rival the visual impact of a mature Jacaranda in full flower.

While traditionally associated with warmer climates, Blue Jacarandas can be successfully grown in many sheltered parts of New Zealand, particularly where young plants are protected from severe frosts during establishment.

How to establish your Jacaranda Mimosifolia?

Position
Plant your Blue Jacaranda in a warm, sunny and sheltered location. Choose a position protected from strong winds and severe frost, particularly while young.

Soil
Prefers fertile, free-draining soil. Avoid heavy waterlogged soils, especially during winter.

Watering
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Jacarandas are relatively drought tolerant and perform well in dry summers.

Feeding
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Spacing
Allow plenty of room for the tree to mature. Plant at least 5–6m away from buildings, driveways or neighbouring trees.

How to maintain your Jacaranda Mimosifolia once established?

Minimal maintenance is required once established. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches during winter if necessary.

Young trees may benefit from formative pruning to establish a strong framework. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and protect roots from temperature extremes.
