Ginkgo biloba 'Fastigiata', commonly known as the Upright Maidenhair Tree, gives you all the character and spectacular autumn colour of a traditional Ginkgo but in a much narrower, more upright form.

Its distinctive fan-shaped leaves emerge fresh green in spring and remain deep green through summer before turning an incredible clear golden-yellow in autumn. 'Fastigiata' is also a male selection, meaning it doesn't produce the unpleasant-smelling fruit associated with female Ginkgo trees.

The columnar growth habit makes this an especially useful tree for narrow sections, driveways, avenues and more formal landscapes where you want height without an enormous spreading canopy. Hardy, long-lived and remarkably tolerant once established, it's a very practical feature tree for New Zealand gardens.

How to establish your Ginkgo Biloba Fastigiata?

Plant Ginkgo 'Fastigiata' in full sun to part shade. Full sun will generally produce the strongest growth and best autumn colour.

When choosing your site:

Allow room for the tree to increase in width with age.
Keep clear of overhead powerlines.
Avoid permanently wet ground.
Give the root system adequate room to establish.
Consider using repeated trees for a formal avenue effect.

Narrow doesn't mean miniature – this is still a tree with considerable eventual height.

How to maintain your Ginkgo Biloba Fastigiata once established?

Water deeply and regularly during the first couple of growing seasons while the roots establish.

During hot Canterbury summers, check newly planted trees regularly rather than assuming yesterday's five-minute shower has sorted everything.

Deep watering encourages the roots to establish further into the surrounding soil.

Once established, Ginkgo develops good drought tolerance and becomes remarkably resilient.

During prolonged drought, occasional deep watering will still benefit younger trees.

Apply organic mulch around the root zone after planting.

The tree is deciduous, so after its spectacular golden autumn display the leaves fall and the tree remains dormant through winter.
