Fig ‘Brown Turkey’ is one of the most popular and reliable fig varieties for home gardens, producing generous crops of sweet, soft-skinned fruit with rich pink-red flesh. It is a brilliant choice for anyone wanting a productive fruiting tree that also brings a relaxed Mediterranean feel to the garden.

The fruit ripens to a brown-purple colour and is delicious eaten fresh, baked, grilled, added to salads, or turned into jams and preserves. Figs are wonderfully low-fuss once established, and ‘Brown Turkey’ is well known for being a hardy, dependable variety that performs well in many New Zealand gardens.

This is a deciduous tree, meaning it drops its leaves in winter and bursts back into growth in spring. It can be grown as a small feature tree, espaliered against a sunny wall, or kept pruned to size for smaller spaces.

Perfect for gardeners who want something productive, beautiful, and just a little bit fancy without needing a full orchard.

How to establish your Fig Brown Turkey?

Water deeply during dry spells, especially while the fruit is forming and ripening. A stressed fig tree may drop fruit early, which is rather rude after all your patience.

Feed in spring with a general fruit tree fertiliser or a good layer of compost around the base. Avoid overfeeding with high-nitrogen fertilisers, as this can encourage lots of leafy growth at the expense of fruit.

Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and keep weeds down, but keep mulch clear of the trunk.

How to maintain your Fig Brown Turkey once established?

Prune figs in winter while they are dormant. Remove any dead, damaged, crossing, or crowded branches. You can also shorten long shoots to keep the tree compact and easier to harvest.

Fig ‘Brown Turkey’ can be grown as a small open tree, trained against a fence, or kept smaller with regular pruning. This makes it a great option for home gardeners who want fruit without letting the tree take over half the section.

Fruit is ready when it softens slightly, droops on the stem, and has good colour. Figs do not continue ripening properly once picked, so leave them on the tree until they are properly ready. Basically, don’t panic-pick.
