Festuca Ovina Glauca
Festuca Ovina Glauca
Blue Fescue
Festuca glauca, commonly known as Blue Fescue, is one of those plants that quietly makes everything around it look better. This compact ornamental grass forms tidy spiky clumps of icy blue foliage that add year-round colour, texture and contrast to the garden without needing much fuss at all.
Blue Fescue is especially good for edging, gravel gardens, modern landscapes and mass planting where you want structure without bulky growth. It also works brilliantly in pots and mixed borders, pairing nicely with flowering perennials, natives and drought-tolerant planting schemes.
In Canterbury gardens, Festuca glauca handles dry summers, wind and frosts surprisingly well once established. It thrives in sunny, free-draining spots and generally prefers a bit of neglect over too much pampering.
A proper low-maintenance plant for people who like their gardens looking sharp without spending every weekend trimming things.

How to establish your Festuca Ovina Glauca?
How to establish your Festuca Ovina Glauca?
Position
Plant Blue Fescue in full sun for the strongest blue foliage colour and best compact growth.
Soil
Prefers free-draining soil and dislikes wet feet through winter. Excellent for gravel gardens and drier areas.
Watering
Water regularly while establishing. Once settled in, Festuca glauca is very drought tolerant and usually needs very little extra watering.
Feeding
Generally doesn’t need much feeding. Too much fertiliser can actually reduce the intense blue colouring and make plants floppy.
Spacing
Allow around 30–40cm between plants when mass planting for a tidy, full effect.
Wind & Frost
Handles Canterbury frosts and exposed conditions well once established.
How to maintain your Festuca Ovina Glauca once established?
How to maintain your Festuca Ovina Glauca once established?
Very low maintenance overall. Simply remove any dead foliage by lightly combing through the plant or trimming back untidy growth in late winter or early spring.
Older clumps can be divided every few years if they become tired or messy in the centre.
Thankfully, this is not one of those grasses that takes over your entire garden while you are not looking.
