Dodonaea viscosa ‘Purpurea’, commonly known as Ake Ake, is a hardy, evergreen New Zealand native shrub grown for its rich purple-bronze foliage and excellent tolerance of tough conditions. The narrow, glossy leaves hold their colour year-round, providing strong contrast in the garden and making this plant a reliable choice for structure and screening.
It naturally forms a dense, upright shrub, typically growing 3–4 metres tall and around 2 metres wide, but it responds very well to pruning and can be easily maintained as a hedge. Ake Ake is particularly well suited to coastal, exposed, and low-maintenance gardens, coping with wind, salt spray, and dry periods once established.
