Dianella Revelation
Dianella Revelation
Dianella ‘Revelation’ also know as Flax Lily is a tough, tidy flax lily with blue-green, strap-like foliage that looks good year-round and handles real-world garden conditions without fuss. It forms a neat clump (typically around 50–60cm tall x 50–60cm wide) and is brilliant for mass planting, edging, modern gardens, and low-maintenance colour contrast.
In spring to early summer, Dianella ‘Revelation’ sends up stems of small blue flowers, often followed by decorative blue/purple berries that add extra interest (and can attract birds).
This variety is known for being resilient through both wet periods and dry spells once established, making it a smart pick for South Island landscapes where conditions can swing around.

How to establish your Dianella Revelation?
How to establish your Dianella Revelation?
Light: Best in full sun to part shade. More sun = tighter growth and stronger colour.
Soil: Happy in most soils (including sandy to clay) as long as it’s not constantly waterlogged.
Watering: Water regularly for the first summer to get roots down. After that, Dianella ‘Revelation’ is generally drought-tolerant and can often cope on natural rainfall once established.
Spacing: For a clean “fill-in” look, space plants around 50–70cm apart.
Site toughness: Handles frost and suits exposed gardens better than many strappy plants.

How to maintain your Dianella Revelation once established?
Quick tidy: Snip out tired, damaged, or older leaves any time to keep it sharp-looking (gloves help).
Once-a-year feed (optional): A light spring feed with a slow-release fertiliser is plenty if your soil is lean.
Divide if it outgrows the spot: Every few years, you can lift and split clumps to refresh plants and spread them through the garden. (Best done in mild weather with good aftercare.)
