Clematis H F Young
Clematis H F Young
If you want a clematis that looks crisp and classic on a trellis, Clematis ‘H. F. Young’ is an easy winner. It’s an early large-flowered type with big, open, starry blooms (around 15–18 cm across) in mauve-blue ageing to a softer Wedgwood blue, finished with pale yellow stamens. It gives you a strong main flush in late spring/early summer, then often follows up with a second round of flowers later in the season — great value for one climber.
It suits fences, pergolas and arches, or you can let it wander through an open shrub for that “flowers floating above” look. It’s also a handy pick for containers if you’ve got a good support frame and can stay on top of watering.
Pruning guide
Clematis ‘H. F. Young’ is Pruning Group 2 (light prune).
Late winter / early spring (South Island: Aug–Sep)
- Remove dead and weak growth.
- Shorten remaining stems back to strong buds to keep a tidy framework. Don’t chop it to the ground.
After the first flush (usually Dec–Jan)
- Trim spent flowers back to a strong bud/side shoot just below the finished blooms.
- This helps drive new growth and improves the chances of that second flush.
Tip: If it ever gets bare at the bottom, do a gentle renovation over a couple of seasons (take a few older stems out lower down each year) rather than one brutal haircut.
- Expected 5 Year Height M Width M
