Chionochloa Rubra, or Red Tussock, is a 'tough as old boots' native NZ grass prized for its ability to withstand some of New Zealand's toughest growing conditions. This slow-growing tussock thrives in full sun but can also handle the extreme conditions in places like Twizel or Hanmer Spring. Perfect for adding a touch of native beauty that’s easy to maintain.
A striking native tussock grass that forms dense mounds up to 1.5 metres tall with distinctive reddish-brown bases. Long, narrow leaves roll inward to create a tubular appearance. Hardy and adaptable, it thrives in exposed, windy conditions and tolerates poor soil and variable moisture. Excellent for erosion control, wildlife habitat restoration, and wetland buffering.
