Camellia Setsugekka
Camellia Setsugekka
Sasanqua Camellia
Camellia Setsugekka is one of the most popular sasanqua camellias around — and for good reason. It produces masses of large semi-double white flowers with slightly ruffled petals and bright yellow centres from autumn through early winter, right when most gardens are looking a bit tired.
It grows into a tall, dense evergreen shrub with glossy dark green foliage, making it a brilliant option for hedging, screening or adding year-round structure to the garden. Compared to many camellias, Setsugekka is faster growing, more sun tolerant once established, and generally pretty easy-going.
A great choice for Canterbury gardens where you want something tidy, hardy and good-looking without constant fussing. Also excellent for creating privacy without waiting half your life for it to happen.
Can grow in clay soil if improved with compost and drainage

How to establish your Camellia Setsugekka?
How to establish your Camellia Setsugekka?
Position
Plant in full sun to part shade. Setsugekka flowers best with good light, although it appreciates a bit of shelter from harsh afternoon sun in hotter areas.
Soil
Prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Camellias enjoy slightly acidic soil but are generally adaptable in most Canterbury gardens if drainage is decent.
Watering
Water regularly while establishing, especially through dry Canterbury summers and nor’westers. Once established, it is reasonably drought tolerant but will perform best with occasional deep watering during long dry spells.
Feeding
Feed in spring with a camellia or acid-loving plant fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
Mulching
Apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture and keep roots cool. Keep mulch clear of the trunk.
Wind & Frost
Handles Canterbury frosts well once established and copes with moderate wind, making it a reliable option for local conditions.
How to maintain your Camellia Setsugekka once established?
How to maintain your Camellia Setsugekka once established?
Trim after flowering if shaping or maintaining as a hedge. Setsugekka responds well to clipping and can be kept neatly formal or allowed to grow more naturally.
Remove any dead or crossing branches occasionally to keep airflow through the plant. Otherwise, it is a pretty low-maintenance shrub that mostly gets on with the job itself.
