If you want privacy fast without the “bamboo taking over the section” worry, Bambusa multiplex ‘Wang Tsai’ is a smart pick. It’s a clumping (non-running) bamboo that forms a tight, upright-to-arching screen with dense, dark-green, ferny foliage and slim culms that can show green through to warm orange-brown tones as they mature. In NZ gardens it’s commonly used for screening and hedging, especially where you want year-round cover and a tidy footprint compared with running bamboos.

Bamboo 'Wang Tsai' is a China native clump bamboo with graceful curving green to orange brown stems and dark green tufted foliage. Highly versatile and suitable for hedging, screens, containers and because of its clumping variety, does not spread aggressively.

Frost/winter notes (South Island): In colder inland spots, expect some leaf burn after hard frosts/windy cold snaps. Don’t panic—wait until spring and then tidy damaged foliage once new growth starts. It’s generally described as half hardy / tolerant of moderate frost rather than “deep-freeze tough.”

Root behaviour (good to know): This is a clumping bamboo, meaning it expands gradually from the centre rather than running off through the garden.

How to establish your Bambusa Multiplexa Wang Tsai?

Light: Full sun to part shade. More sun = denser growth and better screening.

Shelter: In the South Island, give shelter from harsh, drying winds and heavy frost pockets, especially for the first winter. (It tolerates moderate frost once established.)

Spacing for a screen/hedge: Plant about 1m apart for a quicker, tighter screen.

Soil: Best in fertile, well-drained soil. It copes with a range, including coastal conditions, but avoid waterlogged sites and very dry sand unless you’ll irrigate.

Planting tips:

Dig wide, loosen the sides, and mix in compost.
Plant at the same depth as the pot.

Mulch 5–8cm (keep mulch off the culms) to hold moisture and protect roots.

Watering (first 12–18 months)
Water deeply 2–3 times a week in the first summer (more in hot nor’west conditions), then weekly once it’s pushing strong new shoots.

Bamboos hate drying out while establishing—consistent moisture = faster screening.

How to maintain your Bambusa Multiplexa Wang Tsai once established?

Trimming & keeping it tidy

Hedge/screen: Light tip-prune anytime, then do a proper shape-up late spring to summer when it’s actively growing.

Height control: Just trim to the height you want—Bambusa multiplex ‘Wang Tsai’ responds well to being kept as a hedge.

Thinning (the secret to a good-looking bamboo screen)

Once the clump is established, remove older, thinner or crowded culms at ground level every year or two. This improves airflow, keeps it looking sharp, and encourages stronger new canes.

Feeding

In early spring, apply a slow-release fertiliser (or a lawn fertiliser used lightly) and top up compost/mulch. This bamboo is a feeder when it’s putting on growth.

Watering (established plants)

Still appreciates a deep soak during long dry spells—especially if you want dense foliage all the way down.
