Pot Size/Grade

Azalea ‘Carmen’ is a deciduous Mollis azalea known for its soft orange flowers flushed with apricot and pink, finished with a warm golden flare. It is an early-flowering variety that produces rounded ball trusses, creating a bold spring display before the shrub settles into its summer foliage.

Unlike evergreen azaleas, ‘Carmen’ drops its leaves in winter and offers a more open, seasonal habit. Fresh green foliage emerges after flowering and may develop warm autumn tones before leaf fall. Growing to approximately 2m, it is best used as a feature shrub, in mixed borders, woodland-style gardens, or planted with other deciduous azaleas for a dramatic spring show.

Deciduous azaleas prefer acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and generally perform best in full sun to partial shade, provided the roots remain cool and the soil does not dry out completely.

How to establish your Azalea Carmen?

Position
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Morning sun with afternoon protection is ideal, especially in hotter or drier areas.

Soil
Needs acidic, moisture-retentive but free-draining soil. Avoid lime, alkaline soils and waterlogged conditions.

Watering
Water regularly while establishing and during dry periods. Consistent moisture is important during bud development and flowering.

Feeding
Feed after flowering with an azalea, camellia or rhododendron fertiliser.

Spacing
Allow around 1.5–2m between plants.

How to maintain your Azalea Carmen once established?

Pruning is rarely needed. If shaping is required, prune immediately after flowering so you do not remove next season’s flower buds.

Mulch annually with bark, compost or leaf mould to keep roots cool, retain moisture and support acidic soil conditions.
