Sedum 'Autumn Joy', botanically known as Hylotelephium 'Autumn Joy', is one of the most popular and reliable perennials for New Zealand gardens. This hardy, drought-tolerant plant produces large, flattened flower heads that begin as lime-green buds in summer before gradually turning soft pink and finally maturing to rich coppery-red in autumn.

How to care for your Sedum Autumn Joy:Water regularly while the plant establishes.

Once established, Sedum Autumn Joy is highly drought tolerant and generally only requires watering during prolonged dry periods.

Allow the soil to dry between waterings and avoid overwatering.

Sedums prefer relatively lean soils.

For best results:

Apply a light dressing of compost in spring.
Use a balanced slow-release fertiliser only if required.
Avoid excessive fertiliser, which can cause floppy growth.

You have two options once flowering has finished:

For a Tidy Appearance
Remove spent flower heads in late autumn.
For Winter Interest
Leave the dried flower heads standing throughout winter.
They provide attractive structure and can look spectacular when covered with frost.

Many gardeners leave the seed heads until late winter.

Before new growth begins:

Cut all old stems back to approximately 5–10cm above ground level.
Remove any damaged or dead material.
Fresh shoots will emerge in spring.
