Michelia ‘Princess Grace’ (now often sold botanically as Magnolia ‘Princess Grace’) is a compact, evergreen tree or large shrub prized for its glossy green foliage and beautifully scented, creamy-white flowers. Blooming mainly from late winter through spring, the flowers have a soft pink blush at the base and a sweet fragrance that carries well on calm days.

This variety is naturally tidy and upright, making it a popular choice for smaller gardens, screening, hedging, or as a feature plant near paths and outdoor living areas where the perfume can be enjoyed. In New Zealand conditions, Michelia ‘Princess Grace’ typically grows to around 3–4 metres tall and 1.5–2 metres wide, though it can be kept smaller with pruning.

Michelia ‘Princess Grace’ is a reliable, elegant choice for New Zealand gardens, offering year-round greenery, manageable size, and beautifully scented flowers without demanding high maintenance.

How to establish your Michelia Princess Grace?

Position: Plant in a sunny to semi-shaded position. Shelter from strong, cold winds is important, especially when young, to prevent leaf damage and flower drop.

Soil: Prefers free-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid heavy, waterlogged sites.

Planting: Dig a wide hole and improve the soil with compost. Plant at the same depth as the pot and water in well.

Watering: Water regularly during the first 12–18 months to help establish a strong root system, particularly over dry summers.

Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool, keeping it clear of the trunk.

How to maintain your Michelia Princess Grace once established?

Watering: Once established, Michelia ‘Princess Grace’ is reasonably drought-tolerant but will look best with occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Feeding: Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser suitable for trees and shrubs to support healthy growth and flowering.

Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Lightly trim after flowering to maintain shape or encourage bushier growth if used as a hedge.

Frost Care: Young plants may benefit from frost protection in colder areas of New Zealand.

Pests & Diseases: Generally trouble-free; keep plants healthy and well-fed to avoid stress-related issues.
