Pot Size/Grade

Astelia ‘Westland’ is a tough, architectural NZ native grown for its silver-green, strap-like leaves that often flush red-bronze when new. It forms a bold, tidy clump (usually around 0.9–1 m tall and about 1 m wide) that gives instant structure in modern landscapes, coastal gardens, and native-style planting.

This is a great choice when you want foliage that looks good all year, handles windy sites, and pairs easily with grasses, flaxes, hebes, and darker-leaved shrubs. Astelia ‘Westland’ also shines in large pots where you want a strong shape without constant trimming.

How to establish your Astelia Westland?

Position

Full sun to part shade. In the South Island, sun gives stronger colour; part shade is great if your site is hot and reflective or you want a lusher look.

Handles wind and coastal exposure, but will look its best with a bit of shelter from the very harshest gusts while young.

Soil

Prefers moist but well-drained soil with organic matter. Good drainage matters most over winter.

On clay: plant slightly raised/mounded and mix in compost to stop it sitting wet. (Astelias tolerate heavier soils, but they don’t love being boggy long-term.)

Watering (first season)

Water regularly for the first 6–10 weeks, then deep soak during dry spells through the first summer. After that it copes with dry periods better, but it will always look sharper with occasional water in prolonged drought.

Spacing

Allow 60–80 cm between plants for a strong mass-planting effect, or closer to 1 m if you want each clump to show off its full shape.

Frost note (South Island reality check)

Generally hardy to light/moderate frosts; in hard-frost pockets, give it a sheltered spot and mulch around the base while it establishes.

How to maintain your Astelia Westland once established?

Tidy leaves: Once or twice a year, pull or snip off old, damaged outer leaves at the base to keep the clump clean (gloves help).

Feed in spring: A light spring feed (slow-release) and a compost top-up helps colour and growth, especially in poorer soils.

Mulch: Refresh mulch yearly to hold moisture and suppress weeds (keep mulch off the crown).

Divide if needed: If the clump gets crowded or you want more plants, lift and divide in cooler months (or early spring) and replant the healthiest pieces.
