Azaleas
Azaleas are one of the easiest ways to add long-lasting colour to a New Zealand garden, especially in spring when they load up with flowers and brighten shaded spots that struggle with other plants. Our azalea shrubs are ideal for foundation planting, borders, pots, woodland-style gardens, and under trees, giving you reliable colour without needing advanced gardening skills.
Azaleas are part of the rhododendron family, and most garden azaleas love the same conditions: shelter from harsh afternoon sun, consistently moist but free-draining soil, and an acidic soil mix. That makes them a top pick for Christchurch and South Island gardens when you’ve got morning sun / dappled shade and want plants that perform year after year. Once established, azaleas are generally low maintenance—keep them mulched, water during dry spells, and give them a light tidy after flowering.
Why gardeners choose azaleas
- Big spring colour in shades like pink, red, white, purple and apricot
- Great for part shade and sheltered courtyards
- Perfect for pots and entranceways (easy to keep neat)
- Works well with camellias, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, hostas and ferns
- Options for evergreen azaleas (year-round foliage) and deciduous azaleas (often strong autumn colour)
Quick care notes
Azaleas prefer acid-loving plant fertiliser, a mulch layer to keep roots cool, and regular watering in their first summer while they settle in. If your soil is heavy clay, planting into a raised bed or improving drainage with compost and pine bark helps azaleas thrive.
