Scleranthus Biflorus
Scleranthus Uniflorus; NZ Moss Plant
Scleranthus biflorus or Scleranthus Uniflorus is a tough little NZ native groundcover that forms dense, bright green, cushion-like mounds — almost like living moss (but it isn’t moss). It spreads out into a soft, textured mat that’s brilliant for rock gardens, edging, low borders, and filling gaps around stepping stones or between larger plants. In a 3L pot, you’ll get a more established plant that knits in faster and gives you coverage sooner.
This is a smart pick for South Island gardens because it copes well with windy, exposed sites and frosts, as long as the soil drains well. Tiny, understated flowers appear in season, but the real win is that tidy, year-round green texture that makes other plants look sharper.
Best used where you want a neat, low, “always looks finished” ground layer without constant trimming.

How to establish your Scleranthus Biflorus?
How to establish your Scleranthus Biflorus?
Position:
Full sun to part shade is ideal. In hotter/drier spots, a little afternoon shade helps keep it looking lush.
Soil:
The big rule: free-draining soil. It loves sandy/gravelly/rocky mixes and will struggle (or rot off) in boggy ground. If you’ve got clay, plant into a raised mound and blend in grit/pumice/coarse sand.
Watering (first 6–10 weeks):
Water regularly to keep the root zone evenly moist while it settles in — especially in summer or windy sites.
Once established, it’s more resilient, but it still prefers not to bake bone-dry for long periods.
Planting spacing:
For faster coverage, space plants about 40–60 cm apart (closer for instant impact, wider if you’re happy to wait). (Spacing based on typical mature spread info.)
How to maintain your Scleranthus Biflorus once established?
How to maintain your Scleranthus Biflorus once established?
Low maintenance: no hedging, no shaping needed — it naturally stays as a tidy cushion.
Keep drainage clear: the main “maintenance” is simply avoiding soggy soil and not burying it under mulch. Use fine gravel around it instead of bark mulch.
Light tidy-up (once a year): in late winter/early spring, gently pull out leaves/debris that collect in the cushion and snip off any tired patches.
Feeding: optional — a light sprinkle of general slow-release fertiliser in spring is plenty. Overfeeding can make it softer and less tidy (go easy).
Pests/disease: if you ever see brown dead patches, it’s often linked to staying too wet — improve airflow/drainage and trim out affected bits.
